Phi Delta Epsilon hosted three Regional Leadership Conferences in 2009 in Louisville, Los Angeles, and New York. We tripled the amount of students able to participate in International events and hosted graduate receptions so local physicians could meet our current membership. During these receptions we celebrated graduates who have been members for 15-60 years!

In Louisville, students from Kentucky, Illinois, Ohio, Georgia and Alabama represented 15 medical and premedical chapters. After a day filled with medical education, the participants made fleece blankets and took them to Kosair Children’s Hospital downtown to give to children and their families.

In Los Angeles, our delegation was formed by schools representing three countries from University of Arkansas, California State University at Northridge, Concordia, Simon Fraser University, University of British Columbia, UC Irvine, UC San Diego, UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, Universidad de Monterrey, and University of San Diego. They visited Children’s hospital of LA where they took tours and then made staff and children Valentine’s Day mailboxes and cards.

We held our 2009 spring Board meeting in LA and outgoing International Medical Student Delegate, Micah Howard MSIII from UAB SOM, shared a poem entitled “Amethyst and Ivory” with the delegations.

Amethyst and Ivory
by Micah A. Howard
copyright 2008 Hayloft Publishing

Of God and Earth and Time
Of pressures deep and lasting
The Amethyst is made,
it grows in branching violet veins
Taking up from hidden rivers
only what will aide its gleam
its crystalline reflection
adorns the crowns of kings

Of beasts and wild behemoths
Of those that feast on leaves
Ivory is grown,
and with its strength it topples trees
It makes leaders out of children
and brings blood to warring men
It is biologic rock
Made of flesh that does not bend

Of Amethyst and Ivory
and the treasures therein made
Of Royalty and Purity,
cut and carved in shapes and shades
To warrior King and Lover-gift
outlasting births and deaths
Made by her with greatest patience
So that We may have our Quest
So that we may be strong and shine like thee
Like Amethyst and Ivory

In New York, premedical and medical Students from the East Coast of the nation met to learn about Medicine Today. After a full day educational sessions, they brought the books they’d collected and traveled to Children’s Specialized Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ where they read to children and then donated over 150 new children’s books.
